My Guest Post on PetaPixel

I wrote about my experiences covering the GOP candidates in Nevada for PetaPixel.

Overwhelmed and Undergeared: Two Days on the Campaign Trail in Nevada

Give it a read, it’s a pretty good look at the utter insanity of what goes on behind-the-scenes during a campaign event.

That feeling when you wake up as a photojournalist

So this thing happened, and now I’m off to cover the GOP candidates in Nevada. Go figure.

About a month ago, a news wire service called Demotix was shuttered in a nobody saw that coming deal where Corbis Images was sold to a Chinese company. So what little work I had posted there is gone. It might pop back up at some point but other than the “we’re closed, see ya!” email, no one’s heard anything.

Writing Tools: Analog Edition

Most of my writing is done electronically. I have a combination of laptops, keyboards, and even keyboard computers. Even while those are my main source of input, they’re not always the first thing I turn to.

When I need to get something down now I reach for old-fashioned pen and paper. There’s no boot up/wake from sleep time, and it doesn’t require a password start using.1 It’s also non-modal. Meaning I can switch between words to pictures at will. This free-form creativeness can lead to the unexpected.

A photographic history

Film isn’t cheap and won’t develop itself. That was the message I heard growing up. We had a family camera. First it was an old Exakta without an internal light meter.

This was the camera-not-to-be-touched. It was so truly awkward to use, photo-hipsters would love it today. Because of the time needed to get a photo “right” and that we shot slide film1 exclusively, I wasn’t allowed to touch the camera as a child.
