Fitness Update—Week 4

This is my weekly fitness updates. I’ll be posting one every Monday for the foreseeable future.

I update a shared iCloud spreadsheet every day. Follow along!

I gained 1.7 lbs., which I am not happy about. The activity is helping with overal body fat, but I’m not seeing the progress I want.

Today’s weight: 192.1 lbs. with a BMI of 28.4.

Finally! The increased activity is showing results.

Today’s weight: 190.4 lbs. with a BMI of 28.1.

Note: the fat mass reading is inconsistent. It’s just the way the scale works. I’m including for the sake of completeness.

The numbers say this week was a step backwards. I’m disagreeing because of the way I feel. I have more energy and have been sleeping better.

Today’s weight: 192.6 lbs. with a BMI of 28.4.

Midweek Fitness Update, April 2

My fitness goal for this week was to get my steps in. So far I’ve beaten my 6,000 step goal each day. Last week, as I was getting into the swing of things, I relied on getting my walking in during a big burst of activity. It didn’t go so well.

The daily step totals are looking good:

Now I’ve figured out how to spread my walking throughout the day. This might seem simple. I have no requirement to walk during my day other than to move between my desk, coffeemaker, and bathroom.1 I actually need to stop what I’m doing and go outside.

Fitness Update—Week 1

This is the first of my weekly fitness updates. I’ll be posting one every Monday for the foreseeable future.

This week has been eye-opening. First, I’m finding out just how out-of-shape I am. Second, hitting a step goal is really hard if it happens in one big burst of activity.

Apparently every little bit helps—I managed to lose 1.7 lbs. I didn’t do the amount of walking I set out to do this past week. But I did some. Having a loss this week was a emotional hurdle I needed to jump. Seeing the results on the scale makes it real.

Fitness Tools: Withings Wi-Fi Scale

I bought this scale at the beginning of 2013. At the time there was only this on and another by FitBit. Since then almost every connected-device fitness company came out with their own scale. I was swayed toward the Withings because it connected to almost everything. They didn’t make a fitness tracker then. So they were open to every app I used. This is still true. I don’t even need the Withings app installed for my weight data to be sent to the apps that I do use.1

I Suck at Health

So far this year has been about writing. I’ve worked to improve my quality, quantity, and visible output. This blog has been huge help. Making the commitment to put my writing out in the world was both scary and liberating. I’ve also learned about myself. I’ve had to come up with new work habits and strategies. It’s also been an education in goal setting.

The one thing that I wasn’t expecting was the weight gain. In May 2013 I reached my lowest weight as an adult, 155 lbs. For reference, I’m 5'9" and that was a good weight for me. I also didn’t stay there long. Today I weighed in at 192.
